So you have taken the step to have your Last Will and Testament drafted. What now? Know that there can and should only be one original Will. Use extreme caution when deciding where to store the original. My recommendation is that you place it in a safety deposit box at a bank or in a fireproof safe at your home. Yes, you should have copies of your Will made but a copy won’t hold up in court and probably will not be admitted by the judge for the probate process. While a copy doesn’t hold the same weight as the original, it is proof of your wishes, so it’s still important.

Also, make sure you notify loved ones and those you trust that you have a Will and how to access it should something happen to you. If you use an attorney to help you draft your Will, make sure and discuss how they will handle maintaining a copy. It is my practice to maintain a digital copy at my office. This copy is backed up on site and remotely.

Let me know if I can help in any way.
